MoT crackdown – death of modding?
Wednesday, 22 February 2012 00:00

AprilNewsMOT

NEW, UPDATED MoT regulations since January 2012 bring things in line with tougher standards in the EU, and they look like threatening to end the bulk of the mods we can do to our cars and also the type of services and parts tuning companies can provide in future, according to the Association of Car Enthusiasts (www.the-ace.org.uk).

The landmark changes to the MoT – a system run in the UK for the past 50 years – are potentially industry changing and ACE paints a disturbingly scary outlook for our VW-modifying hobby and that of the greater British car-enthusiast recreation. The implications of the new minimum standard of testing across the member States was recently brought to light in an internal newsletter by the UK Government department, the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), called Matters Of Testing. VOSA provides a range of licensing, testing and enforcement services with the aim of improving the roadworthiness standards of vehicles ensuring the compliance of operators and drivers, and supporting the independent Traffic Commissioners.

AprilNewsSkoda

SKODA’S OFF TO A GOOD START in 2012 with its factory motorsport cars taking the top two spots in the recent Jänner Rally in Austria, in January.

First was Car #3 steered by Kopecký/Dresler in a Škoda Fabia S2000 and second was Car #1 piloted by Hänninen/Markkula in a Škoda Fabia S2000 as well. With a Skoda also in fourth place and no Skodas on the retired list by race end, it seems the 2012 car has the reliability and the ‘OMG!’ looks to keep fans happy.

In the surroundings of the Austrian town of Freistadt, the opening event of the new season was part of the European Championship for the first time in its history. In addition to being part of the Austrian Championship as usual, the Jänner Rally is again part of the Czech Championship after a three-year break.

AprilNewsR8S

THERE’S HUGE ANTICIPATION from Audi fans for the quad-ringed mob to enter two R8s into one of the world’s most prestigious endurance races, the Australian Bathurst 12-hour, to defend its title.

The Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia is traditionally famous for The Bathurst 1000 - a 1000km (620 miles) race held annually in October, which traces its history to the 1960 Armstrong 500. It is known among fans and broadcasters as “The Great Race”, and is widely regarded as the pinnacle of Australian motorsport. Since 2000, the race has been run exclusively for V8 Supercars and is now a round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series. Winners receive the Peter Brock Trophy, in honour of nine-time Bathurst winner Peter Brock, the most successful driver in the history of the race.

AS5 gets a roasting
Wednesday, 22 February 2012 00:00

AprilNewsAS5

We’ve always recognised the AS5 as being one of the sexiest coupes on the scene, but now it’s just got a whole lot hotter thanks to top German tuners Abt.

Lifting the bonnet first, Abt has turned up the heat on the original 245bhp 3.0-litre diesel, transforming it into a torquey 300bhp firecracker, while the 2.0 TFSI has had a power hike from 211bhp to 270bhp, with tweaks to other engine variants in the range promised later. To cope with the extra oomph, Abt has dropped it closer to terra firma and added its trademark front spoiler, side skirts and wing embellishers, while at the rear there’s a rear skirt insert, rear spoiler and distinctive four-exit exhaust.
