JUNE 2008

On sale: Monday, 28 April 2008

There's always a great reward for Dubbers when expected cool cars and projects debute at a major show, but there's an even greater thrill for us when a stunning motor that shies away from the pomp and ceremony slinks its sexy self into a show only for punters to end up showering it with praise. The 'small-light' G60 Mk1 gracing our cover today is testimony to the hard work, meticulous dedication and insurmountable perseverance of owner Mark Evans. This mint example does the British Dub scene proud, quietly going about its business of wooing crowds and inspiring the Mk1 masses. Top stuff we say, and we hope you enjoy.
Also inside we've two awesome rides that pass wind in the faces of their rivals when it comes to maximising the old power-to-weight formula. The home-grown twin-cam 16v Mk2 Polo Coupe is an awesome bit of kit, whose light-weight theme is glorified in the Mk1 Golf Berg Cup 1.6L 20v race monster GOLF+ scooped. Yep, 10,000rpm in a car never looked so good, so be sure to check it out!
But if a bit of bling with power is your thing, then the chromed-up hillclimb-engined Euro Mk1 is bound to hit your g-spot, while the welcome randomness of the new-wave New Beetle has styling cues that make it quite the saucy beast.
Shows? Our pictorial of Elsecar hopefully captures the spirit of this old faithful event, while a damp Spring Festival turned out to be a top gathering all things considered, as did the Dutch VW-SPEED.NL season opener we checked out recently, too.
And finally, for all you tech heads looking for a tad more guff than in our The Brain Q&A section, we visited G-Werks for Part 1 of our G60 rebuild How To...
Other than that we'll catch you later. Enjoy.

G-Sexy
Built on a driveway over three years, this mint '78 'small-light' Mk1 G60 ... almost caught fire on its first outing

It's cars like this that blur the line between art and automobile; clock Mark Evans's G60 mk1 in the flesh and the simplicity and detail that runs throughout will leave you open-mouthed wondering just how a 30-year-old car can be so impeccably clean.

Mountain Psych Rider
A Berg Cup Mk1 racer redefines 'disturbing the peace'. A rowdy hooligan that massacres the tranquility of a twisting mountain road

Whomever said that Formula One if the most exciting form of motorpsort obviously hasn't seen the Berg Cup! Based in Germany, its perhaps best described as extreme hillclimbing, in and around the mountainous backdrops of 'the Fatherland'. Your opponent? The clock. Your weapon? 10,000rpm...

Carbon Cyber
Stunning and sexy, both insdie and out. Can such bold modifying change the way we see the new-age Bug?

There's no denying it, the new-gen Beetle has a slightly tainted image amongst many male enthusiasts, so can this hard-looking example alter opinions so dramatically?

Mexican Crave
A stunning, 'crackled black' G60-engine'd Golf is enough to put anyone's Opel days behind them. This chromed, hillclimb-milled Mk1 Golf now certainly fills a void

When you witness your mate building one of the Dub tuning world's best Mk1 G60 Golfs with stunning 'crackled black' engine, it's bound to have an effect on your own car styling moods. Once Thomas Wahl had a mk1 of his own, the rusted example was absolved of its metal cancer sins and a hillclimb-spec, overbored 1.9L plonked in...

The UK's Grounded Crew graces our hallowed cover once more with Jason Buckley's stunning 2.0L 16V Mk1 taking pride of place. The ride actually has its historical roots connected well back to GOLF+ in the day, so it was our pleasure to pay homage to on of the finer UK Mk1 to hit the scene this year. Top stuff Jason!

Also inside, we pay tribute to one of the great Mk2s of the modern Dub era - Simon Sweetland's gem of a car, not unfortunately parted put and 'moved on over to the other side'. With his next awesome project to come, be check out his beloved Mk2 in the meantime, one last time.
