Here’s a VR6 Mk2 that’s as slick and sleek as you like – which is even more amazing as before it was a total bloody shed

SAY WHAT YOU WILL, but I reckon Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music was bang on! She wasn’t into fancy new clothes, big-arse houses or her future hubby’s sparkly new German U-Boat potentially. She liked things kept simple – and these would become her favorite things.

Well, she got the house and her man in the end, of course, and several annoyingly do-gooding kids as well. But before that, her passions in life were simply raindrops on roses, kittens in mittens (quite kinky, if you think about it. Possibly some 3am YouTube video I’ve seen actually) and random packages tied up in string (bomb squad, anyone?).

Likewise with Dubs, of the array of VAG metal to choose from to drive or use as a base for modification, there’s a trend that’s hard to ignore – where people seemingly end up choosing the car they feel uber comfortable with. For many, the choice of car is something spiritual. And these often enough become their ‘favourite things’.

For 31-year-old mechanic Stefan Luyckfasseel of Belgium, favouritism would befall his beloved Mk2 Golfs. But who could blame him, really? The venerable Mk2 Golf GTI earned its own iconic place in VW history, with a tough visual demeanour and a performance-packing power-to-weight ratio only more recently matched by the Mk5 Golf GTI. And the allure of this has led to legions of Dub fans making a Mk2 Golf – in whatever variant they start with and to whatever modified interpretation they endeavor to create – their project car of choice.

“My very first car was a Mk2 Golf 1600cc diesel,” recalled Stefan fondly. “I’ve had lots of other projects, like a Mk3 Golf, Mk2 Jetta, VW Bora and daily driven Audi A4 8E on air and on 19s [B6 series, in other world markets], but I’ve had more Mk2 Golfs as well,” he added. “I chose this type of car because it was my favourite; I just love Mk2s,” he chimed.
